A UUMPS School Picnic is held each year on the second Tuesday of September. This is a wonderful opportunity for new UUMPS families to meet and get acquainted with returning families. We gather at Shaw Park in Clayton, near the large playground by the north shelter, to enjoy a casual BYO picnic supper while catching up with old friends, getting to know new ones, and enjoying lots of fun playground time.
An Open House/Family Fun Night is scheduled yearly for each age group. This is an open invitation to parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends to visit your child’s school. Each group spends 30 minutes visiting their classroom and 30 minutes dancing and singing with Miss Holly, our Music and Movement Teacher. The children love to show off their rooms and their favorite activities, and both younger and older siblings enjoy dancing along with the preschoolers and Miss Holly.
The Fun Fair is a family-favorite event held on a Saturday morning in February. It features simple carnival-type games (with prizes for all), face painting, a craft table, a book fair, lunch foods for purchase, and more. The Fun Fair Committee is responsible for the planning and execution of this event, which is held in the upstairs dining room at UUMPS. Volunteers help set up for the fair the Friday before, staff the activity booths during the fair (30-minute shifts), and clean up afterwards.
Fund-raising efforts vary from year to year and are run by parents for the benefit of the school. Smaller efforts throughout the year might include UUMPS restaurant nights at local favorite restaurants, who donate a percentage of the evening’s proceeds to our school, sales of gift cards, or logo merchandise sales. We hold one big fund-raising event each year: a parents’-only night out, including food, drink, and a silent auction, which is always a fun evening for parents and their friends and family.
The Room Parents in each classroom are a great resource for both teachers and new parents. Room Parents coordinate social activities for families/parents outside of school and help organize class fundraiser donations, special celebrations, and other activities.
Members of the Teacher Appreciation Committee are charged with recognition of the teachers at UUMPS throughout the year. Historically, the committee has provided a light breakfast for the teachers once a month and organized an end-of-the-school-year breakfast or luncheon. Committee members work closely with the Room Parents to solicit contributions to cover the costs of a gift and end-of-year event expenses.
